Google’s Epic Losing Streak

Googles Epic Losing Streak

Hey Google…

Can I ask you something?

What. the fuck. are you. DOING?

Seriously…you are releasing so many SHITTY products in such rapid succession, I don’t even have time to wrap my head around them before you’re already blowing my mind with your next epic failure. Look at this:

9/23/2009 – Google Sidewiki: Great news, everyone! Now ANYBODY can leave comments on any page of your website, and there’s nothing you can do about it!

11/17/2009 – Site hierarchies in SERPs: We don’t like your URLs so we made up our own for you! No, you can’t opt out!

12/04/2009 – Personalized search for everyone: We track everyone who uses your computer and then save that data on your hard drive!

12/07/2009 -Realtime Search: Now when someone searches Google for your name, we show them your Twitter feed! If it’s not a protected account, then OBVIOUSLY you want the whole fucking world to know everything you’re saying at all times!

1/19/2010 – Synonyms:  We know what you MEANT to search for, so we just went ahead and included pages that don’t even contain your search query, because obviously you’re too fucking retarded to say what you mean!

1/22/2010 – Answer Highlighting in Search Results: Now there’s no reason for anyone to actually visit your page, because we already told them everything!

1/27/2010 – Search is Getting More Social: We know who you’ve been talking to, we know what you’ve been saying, we know what websites you visit, we know everything about you…and now we’re using that information to boost the rankings of content that your sister’s ex-boyfriend’s roommate’s old babysitter wrote! No, you can’t opt out!

2/09/2010 – Google Buzz: We read all your emails and chat sessions and formed a list of people you talk to the most often. And then…we showed everyone! No, you can’t opt out! Hey everybody…guess who this guy’s been talking to!!

And I’m sure there’s more. The point is…nobody wants what you’re shoveling! Who is telling you otherwise? Seriously…where are you pulling your test groups from, the morgue? I don’t understand why you continue to “innovate” solutions to problems that no one has. Does ANYBODY want to see Twitter content in their search results? If you’re looking for something to solve, how about addressing some of the problems that people have actually been complaining about:

You used to follow the mantra “launch early and iterate,” but somewhere along the line, you seem to have switched to “launch everything and ignore the obvious.” Is this how you intend to compete with Apple and Microsoft–quantity over quality? How long before we can expect the Google MP3 player to launch?

Here’s a tip…just because 10 million people use Buzz the day it’s released…doesn’t mean it’s a success. All that means is you’ve abused your position in one market to force your way into another. Gee…that sounds familiar…what other big corporation used their dominance in one area to bully the whole World into using a horrible, horrible piece of shit?

Here’s your success right here. You beat Microsoft AND Apple! Congrats!

Alright, go fuck yourself you condescending ****, I was just talking about search, per your post. Go on and keep over-charging clients for a 'service' that boils down to one thing: links from reputable sites. In my mood now I'd love to kick your fucking head in you probably fat ****. /end

  • sabsa

    Remember wave?

Yeah I'm giving you a minute there. It was so anticipated, and then when it was out, it was a big fail. It was my Spore trauma all over again *twitch*

I get the impression they could re-create the Gmail effect with the invite closed beta nature of Wave… creating a buggy echochamber without adoption…

So with buzz, they went the extreme opposite. If closed invite only = fail, throwing shit open to the world is an obvious win! Where's my PHD in logix?

    Way to go buddy!

    It's all about the benjamins.

Quality and privacy be damned, we're making tons of money.

  • georgiecasey

Your bulletpoint list of problems Google isn't addressing aren't problems to non-SEOs.

  • oldschool

Great post. I hate the new features & I hate how search results look these days. I can specify if I want news, images, videos, or tweets…if I don't then just give me a clean page that isn't muddled with b.s.

  • robwoods

Hear! Hear! Instead of launching all this stuff no one wants, here's an idea Google…how about spending a little time actually improving your core search results? Is it because you think your results are already pretty good? You're wrong! How about actually making the results show the sites with the best information, selection, or prices rather than the ones that coincidentally happen to have AdSense ads on thousands of auto-generated crap pages? Google do you truly think you can't ever be overtaken by a serious player with better results? You can add lots of bells and whistles but if you're just putting lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig. Great! Now I get to wade through a bunch of socail results as well a poor search results.

P.S. If I want to see what people on my network are saying on Twitter, I'll go to Twitter. I don't need to see it mixed into search results.

  • http://www.SEOmofo.com/ SEO Mofo

Sure they are. If someone searches for information about a topic and Google returns outdated results that have erroneous (recent) dates in their snippets, then that person is affected by the problem. And customer service is only something that SEOs wish for, is it?

  • http://denverseosolutions.com/seo-twitter-users Domenick

That's my view as well, so much so that it doesn't matter if it is a success or failure. If G can't buy you out, they'll reproduce their own version, with or without quality or thinking the whole project through.

    Good post as usual BEAST!

  • georgiecasey

What, you think a normal searcher will want customer service because they got bad SERPs?! Do you realise the attention span and fickleness of your average searcher. I agree the date feature is crap and gives plain innacurate info.

Here's my list for problems Google should fix with their core search product for NORMAL people, not SEOs:
    - Get rid of Twitter search. It provides no useful info.
    - Let me search for punctuation when in quotes. I was looking for the band [Why?] on Google, looking for concert dates. The question mark is important but Google wouldn't search for it, gave me back crap results and there was no way around it. I was also searching for VIM error messages and it wouldn't search for [<Up>]
    - MAKE MORE USE OF FORUMS. Espeically vBulletin ones. There's loads of valuable info in forums around the net. I know they have forum search but it doesn't crawl enough. Fuck twitter, start hammering these forums. Also, rank pages by post count of users posting or something which won't be faked on reputable forums.

  • morktron

Great post! I have not heard of a few things in there anyway. If Google had a customer service that definitely would be awesome.

Maybe we should all just get off the internet, let the AI take over and go surfing ;)

  • http://www.SEOmofo.com/ SEO Mofo

Oh…I thought Google offered more products and services than just the one search engine. But according to your brilliant comment, it seems maybe I was wrong; apparently, Google's only customers are people who use their search engine. Clearly, everyone else is irrelevant to Google's business model.

Georgie…I apologize for my gross oversight. I'm so ashamed. If you'll excuse me…I'm going to go roam around The Forums, with the hope of absorbing some of their infinite wisdom…so that one day I might be as smart as you.

The last time someone did so many tricks for me it was a distraction so that their brother could sneak up behind me – I'm not sure if Google wants to steal my wallet or bugger me but I sleep with one eye open these days

Ha ha ha ha ha! Quick, before your mood changes, let's meet up somewhere! C'mon, it'll be fun! I'm in Los Angeles…where are you?

    Ireland. weight/height plz?

5'11″ 215 lbs I don't think you're ready for this, Georgie. You really think you can handle a badass like this: http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/3677/seobada… ? BTW…you pickin' up the airfare or what?

  • georgiecasey

You're in better shape than I guessed, still fancy my chances. See ya at ad:tech San Francisco in April.

  • http://www.SEOmofo.com/ SEO Mofo

LMAO! No, Georgie. You won't. Not unless someone wants to pay for me to go. Maybe we could televise the fight and I could get a sponsor or something.

Any internet marketing companies out there want to sponsor me? I'll put your company's logo on my trunks, eh?

  • georgiecasey

Well it's off then 'cos there's no way I'm going to any shitty SEO conference like SES or Pubcon, my business isn't fleecing clueless blue-chip clients for a service that any college intern could do for nothing. The money's in performance marketing baby.

  • sabsa

Why would they give good results when they can give you any result? Sure throw the weather in there. The flu map? Weird, but informative. movie times? Aren't there sites for that? Comparative shopping? Reviews? See now you're getting into territory where other sites have footing, but they can supply their info even easier so google can just serve them up. The landgrab issue is only going to get bigger, so while the social bot grind can serve me Tilla Tequilla's current rectal temperature at any moment, the search engine is looking like it's going to be a user layer over all other sites: it can intuit my likes (social), gather sites that offer up that product (froogle? Anybody still use that?) and buy it without even leaving the serps through checkout. Paranoid, sure. But I'm getting Microsoft circa '90-'98 vibes from google currently.

Mofo, I'll gladly sponsor you for this. Truth is, I went to Ad:tech SF last year and it sucked. This fight would probably be the only entertaining respit. But one condition – you can't wear the fuckin tutu for the fight.

  • http://andrewbleakley.com/ Andrew Bleakley

I'll kick in for naming rights -it wold be worth it just to see what stupidity I could conjure up.

Alright, Georgie…are we gonna do this or what? We'll do MMA rules so you can have a chance to kick my head. Plus my ground game is far better than my striking.

Alan…can I at least wear the pink tights?

I think George and Mofo might end up kissing instead of fighting based on the way this convo is turning out. Stop flirting you to!

I don't quite agree – yes Google is not always clear with the purpose of the new tool when it comes out but then they take care of it, fix it and make an apple out of …
For example when Google Reader came out it was like meh, I looked at it and forgot. Couple of iterations later I tried it again and now it's over two years that I am on it – such a great thing!
The big difference between Google and small startups is when a small startup comes out no one knows about so they have time to fix things before big day.
When Google announce new tool – it comes to millions of people. One group of designers/UI people could not predict behaviors of millions of people. Besides that what's not good for one doesn't mean not good for many, like personalized search – most people benefit from it while only minority is not happy about it.

  • http://www.sorenj.net/ Soren J

    Yo Darren.

Another fucking annoyance is the default language setting in Google Translate.

Google announced that personal search is mandatory, but apparently Google are so fucking stupid they can't detect my “personal language settings” by default –

Hey morons! You know my IP, my ISP geo location, my language settings, my browser settings, my personal info in my Google account…. You pretty much knows everything but keep insisting on Spanish-English by default even though I've never ever in my entire life written a spanish word…

So “Por favor, maldita arreglarlo ahora!”

  • kevinpike

Has anyone heard of Google Agency Land? The simple fact that my blog post still ranks #1 for “Google agency land” means that no one else is using it.
