The Most Epic Misunderstanding of PageRank In Blogging History

By King Douche | April 14, 2011

Just when I thought that the concept of the PageRank algorithm was near commonplace, so basic and well understood, that even monkeys could summarize it, along comes a (now removed due to total humiliation) post by SmashingHub.com (cached image). I am 99% sure it’s not a joke.

Now, I understand that the full PR Algo paper written by Page and Brin is a lengthy one, but surely people understand the basics of it, right?  Surely NO ONE would think that PageRank 1 means ‘The First Page of Google Results’ and PageRank 10 means ‘The 10th Page Of Google Results.’  Right?  RIGHT?!

Thanks SmashingHub.com. No seriously, THANK YOU.

So, you ‘d think that no one would see this right? Well, it was on Digg, which further reinforces my assertion that ‘Digg is Dying.’

Hey – I’m just a lowly copywriter and even I know this is bollox. Page rank of course means that SERPS on page one are rated as “Field Marshall” level while those on page 10 are “PFC class”. It’s all about picking up weapons associated with each SERPS level (I like the railgun best) and stuff like ammo, supplies etc…

Oh my god, that is so misleading it actually boggles the mind!
(I’ve noticed this is quite common amongst those providing business to business advice, I used to think it was just that they seriously had no clue, but I’m beginning to think it’s more a case of providing the reader enough information to potter away for months on end, make some mistakes and finally hire the person who provided the appalling advice to sort it all out for them…)

Love it – thanks for sharing! I still come across ‘SEOs’ or (even better) social media experts who think Page Rank is where a page ranks in google -as you say it ain ‘t the same thing. I think the confusion is the fact that Larry Page lent his name to the metric – page doesn’t mean webpage it means Larry’s measure but not many people know that! M

That is fantastic. One of my clients was approached by someone saying “Yo, what’s up ya’ll? My page has a Google PageRank of 1….I CAN DO THE SAME FOR YOU! Sign my 12 month contract and let’s get this magical journey started.”

I hurt myself laugh that day…
